I grew up on a tiny island just off the south coast of England. Being surrounded by water sowed the seeds for a lifelong passion for the ocean and led me to study Marine Biology at Liverpool University. A Masters at Edinburgh followed and my fascination with marine mammals really took off after studying the behavioural patterns of bottlenose dolphins. Employment with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in the US soon followed and I continued my calling by spending many months up in the Canadian Arctic trying to protect hoods and harp seals from the world's largest commercial hunt of marine mammals. Having worked for IFAW for nearly a decade, I became intrigued about the internal workings of non-profits. This led to a Masters in Business Administration and subsequently a role at the Greater London Authority in the environmental team working as animal welfare advisor to the Mayor of London. Finally, after 2 decades of working in the conservation arena, I felt that I had the relevant tool kit and knowledge to lead and nurture a vibrant and unique charity called ORCA. The charity specialises in using platforms of opportunity - mainly ferries and cruise ships as cost effective research vessels. On board these are a veritable army of ORCA's citizen scientists - people from all walks of life who are empowered with the ability to collect ongoing evidence of marine populations.  and genuinely add to our understanding about marine species and habitats at risk.   This lets us understand whales and dolphins better, giving us the evidence we need to create safer spaces in our oceans to allow these amazing animals to thrive.
