Alta is situated at one of the most northern points of Norway, making it a location of mystery and intrigue for many. Where Arctic adventures juxtapose with city life and amalgamate in a breathtaking metropolis that must be seen to be believed.

If you’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, dreamt of getting up close to reindeer or wish to experience magnificent snowfall, then Alta is the perfect cruise destination for you. Keep reading to learn about the amazing experiences and activities you can enjoy on your next Northern Lights cruise.

Where is Alta?

Alta is situated on the northern coast of Norway in the municipality of Finnmark. Situated so far north, the snowy city is actually closer to the North Pole than it is to central Europe. Located on the southern end of Altafjorden, and often considered the northernmost city in the world, it is a destination of breathtaking beauty.

The city was remarkably only established in 2000 when three neighbouring towns joined together, and the new city of Alta was declared. Today, the city is a hub of activity where you can experience traditional cultures, classic Norwegian food and water-based activities that offer you a true and authentic adventure.

Alta is home to over 6,000 UNESCO-listed rock paintings and carvings that date back almost 7,000 years and depict the daily lives of hunter-gatherers from Europe. Catch a glimpse of some of these astonishing life records at the World Heritage Rock Art Centre.
