How to spend a day in Liverpool

Tuesday 11 July 2023

For those based in the North West of the country, embarking on a no-fly cruise from Liverpool can be an amazing way to explore some breathtaking locations without having to travel too far from home. From viewing out-of-this-world landscapes on your cruise to Iceland, or the enjoying the warm climate and awe-inspiring coastal views on a North African cruise.

However, before you embark on your next adventure, you could take some time to explore the city you are departing from. Liverpool is steeped in history and has a lot of captivating things to explore to really delve into this vibrant and cultural city. Take a look at some ways you can spend a full day in Liverpool.

How to spend a day in Liverpool

  • Learn about the Iconic Beatles

  • Immerse yourself at the Museum of Liverpool

  • Visit the Liverpool Cathedral

  • Relax on a River Cruise

Learn about the iconic Beatles

To this day, The Beatles still live and breathe through the culture and streets of Liverpool, so even if you wouldn’t consider yourself their number one fan, starting your day by delving into one of the things this city is most famous for has to be an essential part of your trip.

Start your day by heading down to Albert Dock, where you will find the award-winning Beatles Story. Here you will find the world’s largest permanent exhibition where you can discover an immersive experience and be taken on a journey through the story of the band's lives and their music.

If you are still in the mood for music, then plan a visit to The Cavern Club. This live music venue is renowned for being the birthplace of The Beatles. There are shows on nearly every day, with some having no entry fee. So, if you are in the mood for music, The Cavern Club would be a great place to spend the evening before you depart and catch some live music.

When writing about the best Beatles locations in Liverpool, Mini Travellers said: “Visitors to The Beatles Story can see recreations of the band’s early homes and recording studios, as well as famous landmarks from their career, such as the Abbey Road crossing and the Cavern Club. The museum also features a replica of the Casbah Coffee Club, a venue in Liverpool that was owned by the family of original Beatles drummer Pete Best and which played a key role in the band’s early days.”

Immerse yourself at the Museum of Liverpool

Following on from the musical history that Liverpool is so famous for, why not delve into some more of what Liverpool is about? From social and community history to their regional archaeology collection, which includes discoveries from the Mesolithic period, you will be able to see the change Merseyside endured years ago, all at the Museum of Liverpool.

Perfect for those wanting to explore the history of the people of this distinguished location, you will be taken back in time with photographs, objects, and much more. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed, so it will be a great place to spend a couple of hours.

Visit Liverpool Cathedral

Being the largest cathedral in Britain and the 8th largest church in the world, this historic building stands out in the Liverpool skyline. Liverpool Cathedral is of the most beautiful structures in the city, and it is free to enter, but going on the audio tour and into the tower requires a small fee. However, the unspoilt views of the city are simply breathtaking and should definitely be a part of your trip.

The construction of the cathedral began in 1904 and was completed in 1978, so it only took 74 years to complete. This means that it may be on the more modern side when it comes to similar buildings, but it does not make it any less spectacular.

Relax on a River Cruise

If you really want to take in the city from a different angle and get a feel for the water, then embarking on a river cruise is the perfect way to do just this. A short voyage will show you stunning views of Liverpool as well as getting to learn about the musical history, heritage, and how the ferries were involved during the First World War.

If you can’t get enough of the water, then be sure to stop by Floating Grace for one of their evening dinner cruises, where you can enjoy a delicious meal whilst floating on the tranquil water.

In her expert guide on visiting Liverpool, Victoria from Bridges and Balloons said: “A classic Liverpool activity is to join the Mersey Ferry’s 50-minute Daily River Explorer Cruise, which takes you on a loop along the riverside with great views of the city’s skyline, including the Three Graces, Albert Dock and the Liverpool Museum. There’s an audio guide that tells you what you’re looking at along the way. There are two stops where you can hop off to visit a space exhibition or a World War 2 submarine.”
