Denmark is a popular Scandinavian country, with Copenhagen sitting as its capital on the east coast. Known for its quality of life, clean streets and fashionable style, it is no wonder people opt to cruise to its shores all year round.

On a cruise to Denmark, you can expect more than just stunning scenery, delectable bakeries and aged landmarks; the country is full of intriguing facts, compelling cultures and historical importance. This guide takes you through some of these facts, answering your questions before booking your 2025 cruise.

Where is Denmark?

Denmark is in Northern Europe and is one of three Scandinavian countries, along with Norway and Sweden. It is the southernmost of the three countries and, therefore, offers a slightly warmer climate than the colder countries in northern Scandinavia. Its only bordering country is Germany to the south, but the eastern coast is only a short distance from that of Sweden.

What language do they speak in Denmark?

The official language in Denmark is Danish. However, some minority languages, including Faroese, German, and Greenlandic, are also spoken in the country. When visiting Denmark, you’ll be pleased to know that English is commonly understood and spoken in more populated areas like Copenhagen and Esbjerg.

Copenhagen is right on the eastern edge of Denmark, very close to the shores that meet the coast of Sweden. The city is split over two islands: Zealand and Amager, the city's central area on the mainland, with Copenhagen airport and suburbs on the adjacent island.

The Øresund Bridge connects Denmark to nearby Sweden from Copenhagen. Copenhagen has been the capital of Denmark since 1445 and is known for its historic trade importance.

Is Denmark Scandinavian?

Yes, Denmark is a Scandinavian country. As mentioned above, there are technically three Scandinavian countries, but Iceland, Finland, and The Faroe Islands are also culturally referred to as Scandinavian countries, depending on who you ask.

Is Greenland part of Denmark?

It may be a surprise to most, but yes, Greenland is part of Denmark, along with the Faroe Islands. Denmark took control of Greenland in 1814 after the Treaty of Kiel, but Greenland was granted home rule in 1979, allowing the region to make its own decisions.

What currency do they use in Denmark?

In Denmark, the currency is Danish Kroner (DKK). 1DKK is equal to roughly 11p. Although some locations in Denmark will accept Euros, Danish Kroner is preferred. Unlike the British pennies you’ll be used to, Danish 1, 2, 5 Krone coins have holes in them!

What is Denmark famous for?

You may be surprised to find out that Denmark is famous for a plethora of things, from world-famous toys to essential cooking ingredients and technological advances.

LEGO was invented in Denmark in 1932 when Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund, started creating wooden toys that, in 1934, would become known as LEGO. LEGO derives from the phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’.

Millions of people use Google Maps every year, and most of them won’t know that it was a vision that came from the Danish brothers Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen. Founding their company, Where 2 Technologies, in Sydney, Australia, in the 2000s, they created a robust mapping system that would later become Google Maps.

Are you a lover of beer? Well, Carlsberg actually originates from Denmark and, more specifically, Copenhagen. J.C. Jacobsen invented the world-renowned beer in 1847 after his father's death, and the family brewery was passed down to himself. In 1970, Carlsberg merged with Tuborg, another famous Danish beer.

Cruising to Denmark is one of the best ways to explore the country. On an Ambassador cruise, whether it is a Nordic or Scandinavian cruise you can experience some of Denmark’s intriguing cities, including Aarhus and Copenhagen.

Effortlessly cool and stylish, Copenhagen is a culturally relaxed city where fashion and friendliness go hand-in-hand. Home to artisan and family-run bakeries, Scandi homeware stores and immersive museums and attractions.

The blog Practical Wanderlust explains a little more about the attraction to Aarhus: “Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark, and though many people outside of Denmark aren’t aware of its existence, its rich cultural heritage makes it a standout on its own – not to mention the charming historical Old Town, stunning modern architecture, incredible food, beautiful beaches, and a theme park in the centre of town!”

Denmark is a beautiful country with so much to offer, so if you’re considering your next cruise destination, then a cruise to Denmark should be high on the list.
